Dissertation Proposal Questions

Qs for Elizabeth

How common are IEP meetings led by students? Any in Knox co? How did you conduct you lit review search?

P16 typo? at all at all

I noticed you included something from England?

How would you change your proposal to justify only looking at meetings w students?

Is there a reason you decided not to do a footnote for versions?

Did you want to leave notations out of all the excerpts?

How did you decide on the illustrative excerpts?

Were any sections beefed up to convince non-DP committee members?

What do you think about CA being based on suicide hotline calls?

Big picture I take from my reading:

The topic: IEP/ITP meetings

The problem: We spend a lot of money and don’t get great results overall with IEP and ITP meetings, there’s a high cost to society and individuals. Meetings led by students are better. Sometimes parents and students aren’t involved.

The question: How do participants in meetings use talk to confront power issues, advocate, construct versions, and what’s the difference in how people talk w/ or w/out student present?

How you will investigate it: DP/DAM

What your method offers: no need to get in people’s heads. Emic stance allows focus on participants, not theories being put on them. No need to collect demographic info—the talk is what matters, not the talkers. See what people do in the moment.

Qs for Doug

Would it be excessive to mention stance on identity in the big studies reviewed?

What’s the capital D discourse?

Were any sections beefed up to convince non-DP committee members?

If DP focuses on the talk, not the participants, was it your topic that made you include so much info on the teachers?

What do you think about CA being based on suicide hotline calls?

Even though there has been a lot of research on teacher identity, do you think new things will pop up because of the increasingly high stakes of testing?

You mention that what English teachers say is relevant to them. Is this relevant from a DP perspective?

Is there another methodology you could have chosen that would have allowed you to balance your role as educator and researcher?

Big picture I take from my reading:

The topic: 1st year English teacher identity

The problem: Identity is tough for people in transition. Teachers bump up against societal expectations, personal expectations, etc.

The question: How do teachers negotiate identity?

How you will investigate it: DP/DAM

What your method offers: Seems like you could add more here about DP’s strengths with this particular topic.
